Ti Cafe

Summary

Problem

As a coffee shop, Tí aspires to curate a safe space for the creative and unique, a place that bridges differing backgrounds while nurturing individuality in all of its forms over a common pastime. Since they don’t have a mobile app, I designed a mobile app for Tí Cafe that makes it easier for customers to order ahead of time, avoid waiting in line, and save time.

As a beloved local coffee shop on Broadway, Tí Cafe frequently sees long lines of customers waiting to place their orders. The lack of an option to order ahead often leads to delays, making it difficult for customers to quickly grab their coffee and go. This inconvenience can be frustrating, especially for those with busy schedules looking for a seamless experience.

Research

Understand User needs

  • Convenience: Users can order ahead and skip the line, saving time during busy hours.

  • Faster Service: Pre-ordering allows for quicker pickups, especially for customers on the go.

  • Personalization: The app can store favorite orders and preferences for a tailored experience.

  • Exclusive Offers: Users can access app-only discounts, loyalty rewards, and promotions.

  • Real-Time Updates: Notifications about order status, wait times, and special menu items keep users informed.

I conducted interviews with 10 coffee enthusiasts and potential Tí Cafe users to gain deeper insights into their needs. The feedback revealed that long wait times often discourage customers, particularly given Colorado's unpredictable weather, which sometimes leads them to abandon the line before placing an order. The majority expressed a strong preference for the ability to order ahead and pick up their drinks in-store, as it would save them valuable time and enhance their overall experience.

Style guide

Visually, I wanted Tí Cafe to evoke a sense of nostalgia deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture, symbolizing childhood, upbringing, and the warmth of family. Tí’s core identity is centered around family, and its primary color, red, reflects warmth, love, and connection. The design aims to create a welcoming and comforting atmosphere, much like the feeling of being home.

Mid-fidelity Prototype

User feedback from mid-fidelity prototypes…

I conducted 5 usability tests on my mid-fidelity prototypes and received feedback from Tí Cafe’s owners. Here are some findings:

  • Love the idea of the Ti Homies: characters from owners’ first respective drawings as kids

  • Easy and intuitive to navigate through the app.

After considering the feedback, here’s the final design for Tí Cafe App.

Final thoughts

Working on the Tí Cafe project was an incredibly rewarding experience that allowed me to deeply explore the world of coffee, connect with the owners, and become a part of their vibrant community. It felt like more than just a design project—it felt like stepping into a space that radiated warmth and familiarity, much like home. I was thrilled to collaborate with the team and communicate my designs, knowing they would help enhance the experience for both the cafe and its loyal customers.

This project reminded me of the power of design to not only solve problems but also to tell stories, evoke emotions, and bring people together. Seeing my work contribute to a place that values family, culture, and connection was truly fulfilling. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of Tí Cafe’s journey and look forward to seeing how it continues to grow and thrive in the community.
